Our Maalems take great pride in molding nature into a divine medley of Zellige. This evolution of turning earth into Zellige is quite challenging and requires extreme precision.

First, dirt is soaked in water for 24 hours, and then molded into 4"x4" squares and laid out to sun dry. Then the clay-like mud is baked in a brick furnace at a scorching temperature of 900 degrees. Once baked the clay is then ready to be embellished with an array of vibrant colors, after which it is returned to the incinerator for its final baking. At last the tile is ready to be turned into beautiful Moroccan Zellige tiles. The Maalem uses a special tool called affute, and chisels out individual pieces with detailed craftsmanship and precise symmetry creating intricate and unique designs.
